MS Awareness Week: Anna’s Leuchie Story
Anna, who has MS, has been coming to Leuchie House for short respite breaks since 2010. Here she explains how important these breaks are to her and to her family.
Leuchie is so much more to me than a holiday. Yes, I get a break – and so does my husband - but it’s much more than that. Being at Leuchie also gives me a chance to do some ‘normal’ things that I can’t do otherwise.
A highlight for me is getting to see my good friend Iris who I met on my first visit to Leuchie many years ago. We enjoy sharing a room during our holiday, shopping trips together and catching up.
Being at Leuchie House is also about getting the chance to be everything you can be. If there’s something you’d really like to do, the Leuchie team will do everything possible to make it happen.
Since I’ve been coming to Leuchie I’ve been thinking about taking a flight in a microlight at the microlight centre nearby. I even had it booked one year but cancelled because I got cold feet. Then last November I decided it was time! With the support of the Leuchie team, that first flight up in the skies above the East Lothian coastline was one of the most exciting experiences I’ve ever had. In fact I enjoyed it so much I did it for a second time when I came back to Leuchie in April!
Another important thing for me about Leuchie is the special way it has of keeping families together. Whether by letting partners and carers have a break from caring – or because relatives close by can visit. That is more than most holidays can do.
I live in Aberdeenshire and my sisters are spread across the country. Too far for us all to be together. So when I was at Leuchie last autumn it was a rare chance for my sisters, Fiona and Nicola, to visit. We did what sisters do – reminisced, caught up on the family gossip and had a girly makeover. It was the first time the three of us had a photo taken together in years, and now I have it as the screen saver on my phone so I can look at it whenever I want.
Being able to do all these things again means the world. That’s what Leuchie is really about.
